How, she wondered, could someone who was absent, or at least not present, carry her? He was not there, he was elsewhere, going about a daily life. But still he was ever-present, and she, for her part, never touched the ground.

Once, after a particularly good year, Kyle had asked Eric why.  Eric shrugged. But Kyle could tell that of course he knew precisely why, and in fact had the answer written on the insides of his eyelids.

through my mind – a summers day,

a long time ago

One brought forth from her a rage that she did not understand. He sought to extinguish her with questioning, while demanding that she be the answer to everything. The other spoke in a voice that unlocked secret chambers within her as though he was the key. She finally saw that they were both telling her a story – the same story; a story she found hard to read, difficult to understand. It was the story of her,  in two very different languages.

Nothing complicates a relationship quite like being in it.

His hand – more of a small paw really, was full of trust. She took it, understanding what it held,  and then led him somewhere he did not want to go.

Clarification, for some reason, does not always result in greater clarity.

There are those who can see the cloud around every silver lining.

Dark and storm wild day

clinging leaves glowing brighter -

and so too this life.

 

He could hear a coin fall in a crowded street and tell what denomination it was. He could see two magpies sitting in a fir tree and know which one to avoid walking under. He had the face of a pig and the manners of a sow. In a hundred thousand lifetimes, he had not known love. He watched a leaf falling, turning slower than the wind that drove it and knew which way up it would land.
